Character and identity
A 28-storey tower at the centre of Xintiandi, Shanghai's polished retail and nightlife quarter, with the Metro and the Huai Hai Zhong Road shopping strip a short walk away. The 307 rooms (47 of them suites) lean contemporary and quirky, with cryptic philosophical phrases etched onto tables and windows, and many face out onto the skyscraper skyline. Downstairs, a café called Éclair turns out its namesake pastry in flavours from chocolate to Grand Marnier, alongside Chinese and French restaurants, a lounge, spa, indoor pool and a 24-hour Technogym fitness room. The register is luxe but laid-back.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-minded couples and solo travellers who want to be in the thick of central Shanghai's shopping, bars and restaurants, and who appreciate playful contemporary art, generous in-room touches (the non-alcoholic minibar is free and replenished daily) and a VPN-routed Wi-Fi that actually lets you use your usual apps.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone after a grand, formal five-star with white-glove ceremony, or families wanting a resort footprint with kids' programming. The gym, while well kitted out, sits underground with no views, and the buzzy district setting means peace and quiet are not on offer.
Bottom line
The pull here is location plus personality: a genuinely central Xintiandi address wrapped in a boutique-feeling, art-filled interior, with thoughtful extras (free minibar snacks, uncensored Wi-Fi, the Xintiandi Style afternoon tea) that smooth a Shanghai stay. Book a higher-floor suite for the skyline, and come if you want to walk to dinner and shopping rather than be cocooned in a palace.
