andBeyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge
Review
Character and identity
Set deep in the Namib Naukluft against five-million-year-old burnt-orange dunes, this andBeyond lodge is reached by a 90-minute flight onto a private sand airstrip. A central building shaped like a rusted sail juts from a lone hill, with 10 one-bedroom suites and one two-bedroom suite scattered along either side. A nine-month, $3 million rebuild reset the design language: subdued khakis and browns, natural fabrics, frameless floor-to-ceiling glass on three sides, private plunge pools, and skylights opened at turndown for Milky Way views from bed. An on-site observatory anchors the evenings, and with only around 24 guests, service runs on first-name terms.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples, honeymooners and design-minded travellers who want the quiet end of the safari spectrum: dune hikes in Sossusvlei, quad biking, e-biking the 12-mile path, cave paintings and stargazing rather than Big Five game drives. The choose-your-own-schedule format suits independent guests who value seclusion and detachment.
Should look elsewhere:
Solo travellers, who will find limited communal rhythm; classic safari-goers chasing predator sightings; and anyone needing strong connectivity (Wi-Fi is room-only and weak). Vegetarians can manage but the kitchen leans meat-heavy.
Bottom line
The pull here is the landscape and the silence: a relaxation-led desert lodge in one of the most cinematic settings in southern Africa, paired with personal service (same guide, housekeeper and waiter throughout) and a genuinely flexible activities menu. Book it for a honeymoon or a milestone trip, request a one-bedroom suite for the skylight and plunge pool, and pair it with a game-focused lodge elsewhere on the itinerary.
