Character and identity

Asher Adams occupies the restored 1908 Union Pacific Depot in downtown Salt Lake City, pairing French Second Empire brick and limestone with a new eight-story tower of 225 rooms (13 of them historic suites tucked into the original depot bones). The Grand Hall lobby, with 14-foot domed ceilings, original stained glass, terrazzo floors and Wild West murals, doubles as the social engine: live music, a vinyl set, a vintage photo booth, and a serious bar. Rouser handles the cooking around a Josper charcoal grill, No. 119 runs whiskey-forward and late, and Counterpart pours proper coffee. Service runs warm and improvisational, cowboy hats included.

Who's it for

Best for:
Design-minded travellers who want a hotel with genuine architectural substance, food and bars worth staying in for, and an easy downtown footprint. It suits sports and concert-goers (the Delta Center is across the street), couples on a city-and-ski weekend, and anyone using Salt Lake as a sophisticated basecamp for Park City, Deer Valley, Alta or Snowbird.

Should look elsewhere:
Travellers seeking a quiet resort, a spa-led retreat, or a remote mountain setting. This is a working downtown hotel next to a major arena, so event nights bring crowds and energy. There's no dedicated spa programme, and families wanting kids' clubs or pool scenes won't find them here.

Bottom line

The reason to book is the building itself and the social life it generates: the depot restoration, the Grand Hall bar, and a kitchen that takes the Josper grill seriously. Spend up for one of the 13 historic depot suites if heritage detail matters; otherwise a Tower Classic King is the smart pick. Time a stay around a Delta Center event or a ski weekend.
