Character and identity
Set across 33 hillside acres of olive grove above Rutherford, this 50-room Auberge Collection flagship has the feel of a Provençal hideaway translated into California light. The design language reads Mediterranean meets Napa: warm-toned, contemporary rooms with fireplaces, deep soaking tubs and terraces angled at the valley floor. The Restaurant, anchored by a 15,000-bottle cellar, runs a Mediterranean-Californian menu (the campanelle with spicy sausage is a signature), with The Bistro and a 40-by-the-glass bar handling lighter occasions. The spa leans into grape-seed and local botanicals, and service is calibrated to anticipate rather than hover.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples, foodies and oenophiles who want Napa without the bachelorette-bus traffic. The adults-only policy (no under-16s), outdoor soaking tubs, sculpture garden and serious wine programme reward guests who plan to settle in for long lunches, spa afternoons and sunset terraces rather than tick off ten wineries a day.
Should look elsewhere:
Families travelling with kids are excluded outright. Anyone who wants to walk to tasting rooms, restaurants or a downtown scene will find the hillside location deliberately removed, and travellers chasing a buzzy social atmosphere should look to the valley floor.
Bottom line
The pull here is the combination of seclusion, a genuinely strong restaurant and a service register that reads the room well, all on one of the prettiest perches in Napa. It is priced accordingly. Couples celebrating something should book a Deluxe Suite for the terrace, or stretch to a Private Maison for the 1,800 square feet, Mercedes loaner and spa credit; shoulder season softens the rate.
