Character and identity
The only hotel directly on the St. Lawrence River, this 45-room inn occupies a row of 18th-century stone buildings on rue de la Commune, steps from the spot where Montreal was founded. The cobbled waterfront strip has a Parisian quality, but on a far grander body of water. Rooms lean loft-like, with bamboo floors, exposed brick or stone, and large operable windows. Taverne Gaspar handles a la carte breakfast (included) in leather banquettes, and Terrasse sur l'Auberge, the rooftop, looks straight out over the Old Port. For spa, Bota-Bota, set inside a moored boat, sits directly across the street.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and design-minded travellers who want Old Montreal on their doorstep, river views from the room, and a small-scale, character-led property over a big-brand hotel. Summer visitors get the strongest payoff, particularly anyone keen to catch the International des Feux fireworks from the roof terrace.
Should look elsewhere:
Families wanting kids' clubs and pool decks, business travellers needing full conference infrastructure, and anyone after a spa under the same roof (Bota-Bota is excellent but across the street). Repeated Readers' Choice listings aside, this is an inn, not a full-service resort.
Bottom line
The pitch here is the address: a waterfront perch in Old Montreal that no other hotel can match, in a 45-room property with genuine architectural bones. Book a Deluxe Queen for the river view and time the trip for summer if the rooftop fireworks matter; off-season stays trade the spectacle for quieter cobblestones and easier rates.
