Character and identity
Set in Hampton Bays, the closest Hamptons outpost to New York City, this 20-room inn traces its lineage to 1697 and inhabits a faithfully restored 1922 Dutch Colonial Revival building by William Lawrence Bottomley. Vaulted and domed ceilings survive in the common rooms, while bedrooms sit under lower, period-correct ceilings. The centerpiece is Good Ground Tavern, opening onto a patio with firepits, twinkle lights, a pool and cabanas. A small spa, basement gym and library round out the footprint. The register is laid-back, historically literate and slightly tongue-in-cheek rather than scene-driven.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and intergenerational families who want a relaxed, design-aware Hamptons base within easy reach of the city. Travellers who appreciate restored architecture, a strong programme of yoga, live music and garden suppers, and the option of cottage rentals with full kitchens for longer stays will feel at home.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone chasing a beachfront address, a buzzy see-and-be-seen crowd, or a full resort with kids' club and elaborate spa menu. Hampton Bays itself has little within walking distance, so guests unwilling to drive or rely on the courtesy shuttle will feel stranded.
Bottom line
What defines this stay is the combination of genuine historical fabric and a deliberately unfussy Hamptons mood, all roughly two hours from Manhattan. Book a one-bedroom suite for the fireplace and considered decor, or a Cottage if you're travelling as a family or settling in for a week. Summer is when the programming, pool and patio life make the rate make sense.
