Character and identity
Perched on a 12-acre clifftop above Weligama's surf coast, this Relais & Châteaux flagship of Resplendent Ceylon is the Fernando family's polished all-rounder on Sri Lanka's southern coast. Thai architect Lek Bunnag laid out 39 terracotta-tiled villas in freestanding clusters threaded through tropical gardens, with two crescent pools (one family, one adults-only) curling around the headland and a new beach club below. Dining centres on the purple-walled all-day Atlas, an intimate Chef's Table for twelve, and The Society cocktail bar lined with bookshelves. The spa runs hyperlocal: Ceylon coconut, honey, tea, coffee. Service is sharp and buggy-quick.
Who's it for
Best for:
Multigenerational families and couples who want one well-oiled resort to settle into for several nights, with enough space to disappear. Design-minded travellers will appreciate the Bunnag architecture and the recent 10th-anniversary refresh. It also slots neatly into a south coast road trip between Colombo and Yala, two hours on.
Should look elsewhere:
Beach purists should note this is a clifftop property: the beach club and sand are a walk down, not your front door. Villa clusters prioritise garden privacy over sea views from the room, so if you want to wake up looking at the Indian Ocean, this isn't quite the configuration.
Bottom line
The pull here is a genuinely complete resort, strong cooking, a serious sustainability record, properly large villas, and Relais & Châteaux service polish, rather than any single showstopper view. Families should book a two-bedroom Family Suite near the kids' pool; couples should go for a Cliff Villa and dinner at the Chef's Table. Pair with Wild Coast or Tea Trails for a wider Sri Lanka loop.
