Character and identity
Cielo Lodge is an eight-suite (six canopy suites plus owner-built additions) jungle retreat perched 1,060 feet above Golfito on 380 private acres of primary and secondary rainforest, with panoramic views across Golfito Bay, the Golfo Dulce, the Pacific, and the Osa Peninsula. Architecture is open-air and minimalist, built from reclaimed hardwoods and local stone, with Boruca masks and floor-to-ceiling screened walls dissolving the line between suite and forest. A single restaurant and the upstairs Sunset Bar overlook the view, with an infinity-edge saltwater pool below. Service, led by the American owners and Costa Rican manager Catalina, is personal and tour-driven.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and design-minded adventurers who want immersive nature without sacrificing a comfortable bed, plus travellers drawn to naturalist-led excursions, indigenous community visits with the Ngöbe, agritourism, and serious conservation credentials. The altitude brings cooling breezes and fewer bugs, making it gentler than typical lowland lodges.
Should look elsewhere:
Families with young children (under 10s are only accepted on full buyouts), anyone who needs air conditioning, beachfront, or a polished spa (the wellness offering is still nascent). The bumpy unpaved access road and remote location also rule out travellers wanting urban energy or quick arrivals.
Bottom line
What you're really buying is the setting and the access: 380 acres of regenerating rainforest, a naturalist on staff, and the owners' deep local relationships, all wrapped in genuinely comfortable canopy suites. Book a sea-facing suite, fly the puddle jumper from San José rather than driving, and come willing to trade air conditioning and a full spa for monkeys, waterfalls, and one of the best views in Costa Rica.
