A 200-year-old kasbah set in the palm groves of Skoura, near Ouarzazate, Dar Ahlam ("House of Dreams") is a 12-suite anti-hotel that deliberately strips away the conventions of luxury hospitality: no lobby, no restaurant, no bar, no menus, no minibars. Rammed-earth ramparts wrap around gardens designed by Louis Benech (of the Jardin des Tuileries) with a heated outdoor pool at their centre. Seven Kasbah Suites thread off the castle's twisting corridors, seven Garden Suites stand alone in the grounds. Interiors honour Berber heritage through textiles, antiques and wood-burning fireplaces. The whole property runs on theatrical, bespoke choreography under founder Thierry Teyssier.

Romantically inclined couples and design-literate travellers who want immersive, art-directed days with no fixed schedule, meals served in a different spot each sitting, and cultural exchange with the local Berber community. Honeymooners, slow-travel devotees and adventurers who'll happily hike, ride or 4x4 into the desert will find their register here.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting conventional hotel infrastructure, a public bar scene, or printed menus to choose from. Families with younger children should think twice (teens and up are better suited), and the property is not wheelchair accessible, with unpaved palm-grove paths that limit mobility.
Bottom line
What you're paying for is Teyssier's choreography: every meal, walk and treatment is staged to a rhythm you set, in a setting curated to within an inch of its life. If that sounds precious rather than thrilling, look elsewhere. If it sounds like the antidote to transactional luxury, book a Garden Suite for space and privacy, and add a few nights at Tizkmoudine to deepen the experience.
