Character and identity
On Vieques, a small island reached by a 25-minute hop from San Juan or a 90-minute ferry from Ceiba, El Blok is a curving Brutalist concrete block whose perforated gray facade plays light like a coral reef on dry land. It is small (30 rooms), adults-only, and LEED Gold certified. Inside, the look is natural, modern and minimalist, with SoHo-boutique furniture and balconies in every room. Placita, under chef Alex Espinal, turns out modern Puerto Rican cooking from a mesquite grill and rotisserie; the rooftop bar pulls a music crowd while La Tertulia gathers around a street-level fire pit.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate couples and solo travellers who want a barefoot, eco-conscious beach stay with architectural personality. The beach is directly across the street, rooftop yoga and stargazing fill the calendar, and the kitchen is a genuine draw for anyone who plans dinner around chef-led Puerto Rican cooking.
Should look elsewhere:
Families (it's adults-only), anyone wanting resort scale, multiple restaurants, a pool deck or beachfront positioning, and the modest. The peek-a-boo showers in most rooms also won't suit travellers who prize conventional privacy.
Bottom line
What you're really booking is the architecture and the vibe: a 30-room concrete sculpture run as a sustainable, design-forward hideaway with serious cooking at Placita. Come for a long weekend with a partner, book a room with a sea-facing balcony, and pair stays with bioluminescent bay trips and wild-horse beaches rather than expecting full-resort breadth.
