Character and identity
Set on the Isla Verde sand and just ten minutes from San Juan's airport, this 388-room resort trades on glamour with history behind it. The 1958 original hosted Sinatra and Minnelli in its heyday, and a $65 million Jeffrey Beers refresh has polished the bones without erasing the throwback elegance: carved mahogany, marble, and the world's third-largest oval chandelier suspended over the lobby bar. Expect four pools, a wide beach, eight restaurants (Caña by Jose Enrique Montes, Meat Market, the 12-seat Sushi By Bou), a Foxwoods-partnered casino, two nightlife venues, and the Well & Being Spa with rooftop fitness.
Who's it for
Best for:
Beach-and-bar travellers who want resort scale with a dressed-up evening scene. Couples chasing pool days, casino nights, and a sushi-speakeasy dinner will be in their element, as will short-haul visitors who value the ten-minute airport hop. Water sports fans (kayaking, parasailing) and design-minded guests drawn to mid-century glamour also fit the brief.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers who want to walk out the door into a neighbourhood will find the surrounding area thin, with most attractions requiring a taxi. Anyone allergic to resort fees (21 percent, Wi-Fi included) or seeking a quiet, intimate boutique experience should keep looking.
Bottom line
The pitch here is beach, bars, and proximity to the runway, executed at a scale and with a nightlife pedigree few Caribbean resorts can match. Book a Grand Tower room with an ocean view for the classic experience, or step up to a Villa if you want pool-side outdoor space and breakfast included. Worth timing around a casino-and-Cabaret weekend.
