Character and identity
Reborn from the legendary 1929 Hotel Formentor on a 1,200-acre private estate at the tip of the Formentor Peninsula, this 110-key resort threads its white façade between limestone cliffs, pine forest and a 1,200-metre crescent of white sand. Estudio Lamela handled the structural revival; Gilles & Boisier dressed the interiors in ochre, travertine, raffia and pale woods, with every room facing the Mediterranean. The anchor restaurant Mel works a farm-to-table Mediterranean register, joined by Shima for Nikkei, Quiosc for paella under the pines, and Cercle as the social heart. Working vineyards, century-old olive groves, a private yacht and hiking trails into the cape complete the picture.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and families who want a Mediterranean estate stay with serious provenance: design-literate guests who appreciate the Lamela and Gilles & Boisier work, oenophiles drawn to the on-site vineyard, and active travellers keen on boat days to hidden coves, hiking to the Formentor lighthouse, and easy beach hours with concierge service. Honeymooners do well in the pool suites.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone booking the 2024 season should know the property is still phasing in: the permanent spa, several restaurants, the chapel weddings programme and the possessió manor house are 2025 arrivals. Urban travellers who want walkable nightlife or proximity to Palma will find the hour-long transfer tedious.
Bottom line
What you're paying for is the setting and the pedigree of the renovation, not yet the finished product: significant pieces of the food and wellness programme only land in 2025. Book a sea-view room or a pool suite, target the shoulder weeks when the opening discount applies, and come back next season once Shima, the permanent spa and the ice cream parlour are properly open.
