Character and identity
Set inside Downtown LA's 1930s Commercial Exchange building, Freehand is a Roman & Williams-designed hybrid of hostel and hotel that opened in 2017 and reframed what shared lodging can look like. The lobby keeps the original tiled bar and pairs it with earthy wood tones and craftsman-inspired pieces. Across 226 rooms (167 private, 59 shared), the look is hand-woven textiles, painted tile and work by local artists. The Exchange handles Israeli-leaning shared plates, Rudolph's Bar & Tea pours tea-infused cocktails in the lobby, and rooftop Broken Shaker pairs tropical drinks with a pool and skyline views.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate millennials and solo travellers who like communal energy, a strong cocktail programme and walkable Downtown access. Couples on a budget who care more about interiors and rooftop scene than square footage will find the price-to-style ratio hard to beat, as will anyone choosing the property for Broken Shaker alone.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers wanting full-service luxury, plush bathrooms or privacy should book elsewhere. The shared rooms are thoughtfully done but still bunk beds with curtained showers, and the private rooms are simple rather than indulgent. Families and anyone sensitive to Downtown LA's grittier blocks will struggle.
Bottom line
What you're paying for is a serious design hotel wrapped around an affordable room product, with one of LA's best rooftop bars on top. Book a private studio or suite if you want hotel-grade comfort, take a bunk if the rate matters more than the room, and plan at least one night around Broken Shaker.
