Character and identity
Set just outside Menaggio on the western shore of Lake Como, this 19th-century neoclassical mansion trades the bustle of Bellagio and Varenna for a quieter, more private stretch of waterfront framed by snow-capped peaks. The recently refreshed interiors play a contemporary palette and modern furnishings against original chandeliers and ornate moulding, with many rooms opening onto lakefront balconies and soaking tubs with a view. Dining centres on 1827, a fine-dining venue with a wrap-around terrace, and Lago Restaurant, where breakfast runs to cream-stuffed pastries, cured meats and made-to-order eggs. Erre Spa adds chromotherapy showers, a Kneipp path and a Himalayan salt room. Service is anticipatory and polished.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and design-literate travellers who want a quiet, romantic Lake Como base with serious spa time, lakefront dining and easy boat access to Bellagio for day trips. Those who value privacy, polished service and a property that balances 19th-century bones with modern comfort will feel at home here.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone who wants to step out of the lobby into a buzzing town, or families looking for a kids' club and high-energy programming. The secluded position outside Menaggio is the point, but it means relying on the hotel or a boat for almost everything beyond the gates.
Bottom line
The draw here is the combination of a quiet lakefront setting, a genuinely substantial spa and unusually attentive staff, in a property small enough to feel personal. Book a lake-view room with a balcony and soaking tub to get the full effect, build in at least half a day at Erre Spa, and target shoulder-season rates in late spring or early autumn.
