Character and identity
Tucked behind Piccadilly Circus on a pedestrianised courtyard, Ham Yard is Firmdale's London flagship and the fullest expression of Kit Kemp's design language: 91 rooms and 24 residences in which no two are alike, awash with bold fabrics, layered prints and a vivid colour palette. The restaurant radiates from a central bar with well-spaced rooms serving British classics (the fillet steak with wild mushroom and truffle is a standout), while a rooftop terrace with olive trees, the Soholistic Spa, a 190-seat theatre and a restored 1950s bowling alley round out the property. Service runs slow, generous and genuinely interested.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate couples and solo travellers who want central London on their doorstep without staying on a tourist artery, plus families drawn to the relaxed, child-friendly register and connecting rooms. The Residences, with kitchens and 850 square foot living spaces, suit longer stays and groups who'd otherwise consider a Mayfair rental.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers seeking the formal, hushed register of a traditional grand London hotel may find the colour-saturated maximalism too playful. Anyone wanting a quiet residential pocket should note Soho is lively, and the spa and gym, while competent, won't rival dedicated wellness destinations.
Bottom line
This is a Kit Kemp showcase first and a hotel second: the design and the unhurried, personable service are what you're paying for, not a marquee chef or a destination spa. Book a Luxury Terrace room for the balcony and city views, or a Residence for stays beyond a few nights. Worth securing well ahead during West End theatre season.
