Character and identity
Set 1,000 feet above the Bay of Naples on Anacapri's cliff edge, this 51-room villa hotel occupies a former Russian prince's mansion and trades on one of the most dramatic vantage points in the Mediterranean: Vesuvius, the Sorrentine peninsula and open sea spread out below. The architecture leans Roman classical (arches, columns, garden statuary, a bust of the emperor himself) softened by lavender and rosemary. Chef Eduardo Vuolo's Terrazza di Lucullo handles the cooking, the Terrace Bar pours champagne at sunset, and a two-level infinity pool appears to spill straight into the bay. Service is family-run and warm. Seasonal: May through October.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples after a romantic, secluded perch with serious views and serious cooking. The Friday morning trip to the property's fishmonger, the clifftop kitchen garden, and Vuolo's seafood-led menu reward food-minded travellers, while design literates will appreciate the classical-Roman detailing and sculpture-dotted grounds.
Should look elsewhere:
Beach seekers, since this is a clifftop property, not a sand-and-sea resort. Families with young children may find the layout and romantic register a poor fit, and anyone wanting the bustle of Capri town will note that Anacapri is the quieter side of the island.
Bottom line
What you're paying for here is the position: a clifftop eyrie where the view from your balcony, the pool and the restaurant is genuinely without rival on Capri. Couples celebrating something should book one of the five specialty suites (the Caesar, with its arches and columns, is the showpiece) and aim for shoulder season in May or October to dodge peak crowds.
