Character and identity
Set on the Riva degli Schiavoni with the lagoon at its doorstep, the Danieli occupies a converted 14th-century Doge's palace, all Gothic arches, gilded staircases and Venetian Murano detail. The 204 rooms spread across interconnected historic buildings, with the Bridge of Sighs and Piazza San Marco a few minutes' walk away. The rooftop Terrazza Danieli serves precise Venetian cooking (wild seabass with sea urchin, veal with caramelised milk bread) and looks straight across to San Giorgio Maggiore. The register is formal, ceremonial, distinctly Old World Venice.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and design-literate travellers who want to stay inside a piece of Venetian history rather than near it. The lagoon-front position, palatial public rooms and walking proximity to San Marco make it ideal for first-time visitors who want the postcard version of Venice and are happy to pay for the address.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone after a quiet, contemporary boutique feel will find it too grand and too trafficked. The Riva degli Schiavoni is one of Venice's busiest waterfronts, and families wanting pool-and-kids'-club amenities or guests prioritising modern minimalism over historic patina will be happier in the lagoon resorts on Giudecca or the Lido.
Bottom line
What you're really booking is the building and the address: a working Doge's palace on the lagoon, with the rooftop view across to San Giorgio Maggiore doing much of the heavy lifting. Spend up for a lagoon-facing room in the historic Palazzo Dandolo wing rather than a courtyard category, and aim for shoulder season when the Riva is calmer.
