Character and identity
Tucked into central Rome, Hotel De' Ricci is a tiny eight-suite property built entirely around wine. The ground floor sets the tone with secluded booths, low lighting and draped curtains, more clandestine wine bar than conventional lobby. Suites are individually decorated in a mid-century register inspired by the 1940s, 50s and 60s, with polished parquet floors, muted blues and greys, and Roman scenes by illustrator Andrea Ferolla on the walls. Bathrooms are modern in black tile. The signature feature: every suite has its own fully stocked wine cellar, curated by staff who double as sommeliers.
Who's it for
Best for:
Wine-obsessed couples and "old school lushes" who want a small, discreet bolthole in Rome with serious oenophile credentials. The in-suite cellar (stocked to your tastes), the basement cellar tour, private tastings and the daily aperitif of small plates paired to your bottles are the real draw. Design-minded travellers who like mid-century interiors will also feel at home.
Should look elsewhere:
Families, anyone wanting a full hotel experience with spa, gym, pool or multiple restaurants, and travellers who prefer a buzzy lobby scene. With only eight rooms and a wine-bar atmosphere, this is not the place for kids or for guests who want resort-style amenities.
Bottom line
The wine programme is the entire proposition here: sommelier staff, a personalised in-suite cellar, basement tours and private tastings turn a Rome stay into something closer to a residency in a cellar. Book it if drinking well in private is the point of the trip. The Junior Suites are the smallest but full of character, and the daily in-suite aperitif is the moment to catch.
