Character and identity
A 130-room boutique inn in Goose Hollow, a few blocks west of downtown Portland, deLuxe trades on a Golden Age of Hollywood fantasy. Glass doors open onto floor-to-ceiling black-and-white movie reels, crystal chandeliers, gilt ceilings and pale-gold lounge chairs. The two anchor venues are Gracie's, a glamorous dining room serving Afternoon Tea with Smith Teamaker blends and a smoked salmon hash brunch, and the Driftwood Room, a sultry retro cocktail bar with signature drinks built around hibiscus-tea syrups and a beloved late-night happy hour. The honor bar reads as a Portland-makers cheat sheet: Burnside Bourbon, King Estate Pinot, Xocolatl de David, BeeLocal honey.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples chasing a romantic, theatrical stay, wedding parties wanting a photogenic base, and cinephile Boomers who can quote every frame on the lobby screen. If cocktails in a velvet-and-chandelier setting, classic film screenings, and Portland-centric details please you, this lands cleanly.
Should look elsewhere:
Families and design minimalists won't connect with the costume-piece styling. Rooms vary significantly: some bathrooms are cramped, and the strongest dinners are off-property at Bistro Agnes, Grassa or Bamboo, so guests wanting a full in-house dining scene should look elsewhere.
Bottom line
The draw is atmosphere, the Driftwood Room and lobby together do more emotional work than the bedrooms, which run inconsistent in size and finish. Come for the cocktail-and-cinema theatre, not a uniform luxury room product. Book a corner Studio Suite (or the Dietrich Suite if you want the circular bed), and time a visit around Driftwood's late-night happy hour and Gracie's Afternoon Tea.
