Character and identity
Set on a quiet residential street in Pacific Heights, the Hotel Drisco reads more like a stately apartment building than a hotel: a 1903 Edwardian boarding house turned 43-key bolthole, freshly reworked in a December 2023 renovation. The design language is hushed and heritage-forward, with warm tones, Ionic mahogany columns, a custom Helios stained-glass window in the downstairs sitting room, and the original brass rosette echoed throughout. There are 27 rooms and 16 suites, no restaurant or spa on site, but a complimentary European-style breakfast, nightly wine reception with local producers, gold-tasseled keys, chauffeur service, and loaner e-bikes give it a residential-club feel.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and solo travellers who want a calm, design-literate base away from the downtown churn, with strong included extras (breakfast, evening wine and snacks, car service, bikes) and easy access to the Presidio, Palace of Fine Arts, and Fillmore Street. Architecture and interiors fans will find plenty to study.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting a full-service hotel with an on-site restaurant, bar scene, or spa should book elsewhere, as treatments require a walk to nearby studios. The hilly residential setting is inconvenient if you want to walk to Union Square or the waterfront, and families needing space and pool time won't be well served.
Bottom line
What defines a stay here is the residential-feel hospitality: a small Edwardian house where the included breakfast, nightly wine hour, and chauffeur effectively replace the missing restaurant and bar. Book it if you value quiet, neighborhood immersion, and design detail over central location. A renovated suite is the room category worth the upgrade; pack comfortable shoes for the hills.
