Character and identity
Set on a cobblestoned street in Old Montreal, Hôtel Gault occupies an 1871 former general store whose stone façade gives no hint of what waits inside: a 30-room boutique that helped launch the city's design hotel scene in 2004 and still defines it. The recently refreshed lobby, reworked by original architects YH2, leans into soft curves, warm woods and natural light. Rooms run loft-style with polished concrete floors and huge windows, industrial but warm. There's no formal restaurant, just a breakfast room and lobby lounge, and no spa, though there's a partnership with nearby Spa Scandinave. Service is local, knowing, unfussed.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate couples and solo travellers who want quiet, grown-up luxury in walkable Old Montreal, plus business guests and longer-stay visitors who'll appreciate the apartment-style rooms with kitchenettes. If you furnish your own home with intent and want a concierge who actually knows where to drink natural wine, this is your hotel.
Should look elsewhere:
Families wanting kids' programming, travellers who want a full-service restaurant and buzzy bar on property, and anyone who treats the hotel gym as non-negotiable. The fitness room is basic, dining options are limited to breakfast and room service, and the atmosphere skews adult and hushed.
Bottom line
What you're paying for here is design integrity and a genuinely Montréal sense of place, not a resort-style amenity stack. Book a Terrace Suite in the warmer months for the private outdoor space and Old Port views, or one of the apartment layouts if you're staying more than a few nights. Skip it if you need on-site dining and spa under one roof.
