Character and identity
Set on 42 acres on the undeveloped southeast coast of St Barts, Le Toiny feels less like a hotel and more like a private estate run by a hands-on French family. The 22 villas, refreshed in 2017 by London designer Lady Bee Osborn, layer petrified wood, mother-of-pearl and sun-bleached teak into a neutral coastal palette with flashes of blue. The infinity pool runs the length of the dining terrace, overlooking one of the island's best surf breaks. The Serenity Spa Cottage uses the local Ligne St. Barth line, and the Toiny Beach Club occupies two cottages dating to the 1700s.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples seeking seclusion, privacy and a quiet, residential pace. This is for travellers who want a villa they need never leave, a romantic hideaway with surf views, gentle spa rituals and discreet service, and who would actively avoid the Nikki Beach and La Plage day-club circuit on the other side of the island.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting a walk-out swimmable beach, a buzzy bar scene or proximity to Gustavia's restaurants. The nearest shore is rocky and a steep uphill walk back, so beach days mean driving to Saline or Gouverneur. Families wanting structured kids' programming will find more elsewhere.
Bottom line
The defining quality here is seclusion: a quiet, residential villa estate on the wild side of the island, scaled for couples who want to disappear. Book a villa with its own plunge pool, plan to rent a car for beach runs to Saline and Gouverneur, and come in shoulder season if you want the same calm without peak-week rates.
