Character and identity
A Beaux-Arts grande dame on Royal Street since 1886, Hotel Monteleone has been run by five generations of the founding family and anchors the French Quarter with a marble-and-chandelier lobby that locals treat as a meeting point. The 600-room property spans the original building and the newer Iberville Tower, with 96 suites split between Luxury and Literary categories. Signature spaces include the slowly revolving Carousel Bar, where the Vieux Carré was invented in 1938, Criollo (coastal Italian meets refined Southern, with a Le Petit Chef projection-mapped dinner), the rooftop pool, and the calm, full-service Spa Aria. Service is old-school, tenured, and warmly familial.
Who's it for
Best for:
Travellers who want to feel New Orleans history in the walls: literary pilgrims, cocktail obsessives, couples chasing French Quarter atmosphere, and pet owners (all rooms are pet-friendly). Ideal for those who like grand lobbies, live jazz off the elevator, and walking out the door straight onto Royal and Bourbon. Mardi Gras and Tales of the Cocktail fans, take note.
Should look elsewhere:
Design-forward minimalists who prefer crisp contemporary interiors will find the gilded, chandelier-heavy aesthetic too ornate. Light sleepers wary of French Quarter noise, or anyone spooked by the hotel's openly advertised haunted reputation, should consider quieter Garden District options. At 600 rooms, this is not an intimate boutique.
Bottom line
The Carousel Bar alone justifies the booking: a rotating, century-old lounge that doubles as the hotel's living room and one of the great drinking rooms in America. Pair that with a tenured staff and an unbeatable Royal Street position. Book a refurbished Iberville Tower room or a Luxury Suite with French Quarter views; aim for March's Tennessee Williams Festival or shoulder-season rates outside Mardi Gras and Tales of the Cocktail.
