Character and identity
Half an hour south of Naha Airport, past sugarcane fields, Hyakuna Garan rises from the sand above Hyakuna Beach as a limestone building topped with a striking coral red roof. The 2012-built property is small and independent: just 14 executive rooms and three suites, all ocean-facing, with no neighbouring hotels in sight. The design pulls nature inward through airy courtyards, open corridors and oversized windows. A second-floor Zen Room hosts yoga under banyan trees, while the Garan Spa runs anti-ageing protocols using Swiss Perfection. The register is hushed, adults-only, and built around the view.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and honeymooners who want seclusion, a serious soaking-tub-and-ocean ritual, and a property where the design and setting do the talking. Stargazers, wellness-minded guests drawn to yoga and Swiss Perfection facials, and travellers planning a Ryukyu cultural side trip to sacred Kudaka Jima will find this a natural fit.
Should look elsewhere:
Families are out: under-13s aren't permitted. Travellers who want walkable dining, nightlife, or a buzzy resort scene will feel marooned, as there's nothing else nearby. If you need multiple restaurants or extensive kids' or group facilities, the scale here is too intimate.
Bottom line
The defining experience is the houjouan: six private rooftop open-air baths overlooking the Pacific, free to reserve as a guest, and best timed for sunrise or sunset. Book this for a romantic escape rather than an Okinawa sightseeing base, and request one of the three suites if budget allows. Pair the stay with a half-day to Kudaka Jima.
