Kanopi House
Review
Character and identity
Kanopi House is a five-treehouse retreat built into the banyan canopy above the Blue Lagoon, on the wild eastern coast near Port Antonio. The structures are made from locally sourced timber and threaded through vines and 100-foot trees, so the architecture genuinely disappears into the rainforest rather than imposing on it. The Living Room restaurant leans into Jamaican cooking, think curried seafood and green bananas, and the lagoon itself functions as the swimming pool. Massages happen in your bedroom. The register is barefoot, intimate and quietly hosted rather than uniformed and choreographed.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and design-minded travellers who want a Swiss Family Robinson fantasy with a Jamaican accent: people who value seclusion, jungle and water over resort infrastructure, and who like the idea of swimming the Blue Lagoon before breakfast and eating local food cooked simply. Honeymooners and writers will be happy.
Should look elsewhere:
Families needing a kids' club, anyone who wants a beach on the doorstep, sun-loungers and a pool deck, or a choice of restaurants and bars within walking distance. With only five rooms and one dining room, this is not a property for guests who want variety, nightlife or a full-service spa.
Bottom line
The whole proposition is the setting: treehouses in the banyans above the Blue Lagoon, with cooking and treatments built around that, rather than a conventional hotel offering. Book it if you want the rainforest and the water to be the experience and you're comfortable with a five-key, low-key operation. Go in shoulder season for the calmest lagoon swims.
