Character and identity
Set in Mijas Golf between Malaga and Marbella, La Zambra is a contemporary Andalucian reimagining of the old Hotel Byblos, reworked by Mallorcan architects Esteva i Esteva and Marugal's Pablo Carrington. The aesthetic is elemental: whitewashed walls, natural stone, Moorish patios, latticework, cypress cloisters, handcrafted ceramics, and the original blue roof tiles. There are 115 rooms and 82 suites, all with private balconies. Basque chef Iker Gonzalez Ayerbe oversees four outlets including El Palmito brasserie and neo-taverna Picador, while the forthcoming Mood Spa will be the largest on the Costa del Sol. Staff, dressed in Cortana linen, set a relaxed, unfussy register.
Who's it for
Best for:
Golfers (two Robert Trent Jones courses on the doorstep, fifteen more within ten minutes), design-literate couples drawn to a quieter, more architectural take on the Costa del Sol, active travellers piecing together yoga, padel and personal training, and families, with a dedicated kids' pool, Baby Club and Kids Club.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting a beachfront base or a walkable resort town: the surrounding Mijas Costa area isn't scenic, and Mijas Pueblo is a twenty-minute drive. Nightlife seekers and Marbella party crowds will find the mood too low-key, and the spa is still settling in.
Bottom line
The draw here is atmosphere and light: a confident, pared-back Andalucian sensibility that feels genuinely distinct on this stretch of coast, paired with serious Basque-Andalucian cooking. Spend the money if you want design and golf rather than beach. Book a suite with a pool-facing balcony, and aim for shoulder season when the courtyards and patios show best.
