Character and identity
Set on the edge of the New Forest National Park, a mile and a half from Lyndhurst, Lime Wood occupies a Regency manor with origins as a 13th-century forest lodge, extended in 2019 with a Georgian-style wing. The 32 rooms split between the main house and woodland grounds, with interiors by Susie Atkinson mixing antiques and contemporary pieces. Angela Hartnett and Luke Holder's Hartnett Holder & Co anchors the dining, with the Brudnizki-designed Courtyard Bar alongside. The Herb House spa runs to 10 treatment rooms, three pools and a rooftop herb garden. Staff wear tweed; the register is rural-luxe and unfussy.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples wanting a forest hideaway with serious cooking, spa-focused friends' trips, and design-literate guests who appreciate the Atkinson-Brudnizki interiors. Families are well catered for, with dedicated family swim sessions, bikes and wellies for all ages, a kids' menu and babysitting. Dog owners can bring pets to the Garden Lodges.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone after city energy, beach, or a full-service resort scale will find it too tucked away and too small. Wheelchair users should note that gravel paths and cottage bathrooms have real limitations, despite ground-floor access in the main building.
Bottom line
The combination of Hartnett Holder & Co's cooking and the Herb House spa, set inside a national park, is what makes this place hold its loyal following. Book a Forest Cottage for log fires and woodland privacy, or the over-water lake cabin if you're a couple. Aim for autumn pannage season or spring for the best of the forest.
