Character and identity
Set around an 1840s Sutherland sandstone manse an hour north of Inverness, Links House is a 15-room country house hotel that sits just 50 feet from the first tee at Royal Dornoch, one of the world's great links courses. Rooms are split across three adjoining stone buildings (five in the original manse, ten in the newer wings) and dressed in tasteful tweeds, William Morris-style curtains, antler-base benches, and paintings of Highland cattle and kilted figures. Expect a serious gastronomic restaurant, a deep wine cellar, and whisky tastings in the library. The register is small-scale, sporting, and properly Highland.
Who's it for
Best for:
Golfers, first and foremost, given the position on the Royal Dornoch tee. Beyond that, couples who want a tweedy, fire-lit Highland base for castle visits, coastal walks, and whisky, and food-minded travellers who appreciate a strong kitchen and cellar in a 15-room setting.
Should look elsewhere:
Families chasing kids' clubs and pools, design purists allergic to country house decor (tartans, antlers, Highland cow paintings), and anyone wanting a buzzy urban scene. Dornoch is remote: an hour from Inverness, and the rhythm is slow.
Bottom line
The proposition here is location and atmosphere: a properly run small country house pressed up against one of the world's top links, with cooking and a cellar that justify staying in for dinner. Book it if you're playing Royal Dornoch or touring the Highlands as a couple, and consider a manse room for the period character. The Blue Flag beach is a ten-minute walk.
