Character and identity
Set in a Grade II-listed 1922 stone landmark on the South Bank, this 206-room hotel sits directly opposite the Houses of Parliament with the Thames at its feet. The interiors lean into the building's parliamentary past: vaulted ceilings, wood-panelled chambers and original bookcases are softened by art-deco carpets, commissioned works from local artists and witty London references (red phone box included, bowler-hat curtains, orange chamber-style chairs). Gillray's Steakhouse pours more than 120 gins alongside seasonal British cooking, The Library serves afternoon tea among Greek statues, and there's an Olympic-sized indoor pool and gym on site.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and culture-minded travellers who want to walk straight onto the South Bank for theatre, galleries and the river walk, and who appreciate a hotel with genuine architectural character. Suite guests and Marriott Elite members get the most from the property thanks to 24-hour M Club Lounge access and breakfast in The Library.
Should look elsewhere:
Design purists chasing a contemporary boutique aesthetic, and anyone who prefers Mayfair polish or a quieter residential postcode. The South Bank pavement outside is one of London's busiest tourist arteries, even if the courtyard buffers it.
Bottom line
The defining asset here is the address: few London hotels put you this close to Big Ben, the Eye and the river, with rooms framing the view. Book a Balcony Suite for the full Parliament panorama, or at minimum insist on a river-facing room; a standard interior room squanders the main reason to stay. Elite status materially improves the experience.
