Character and identity
LUX Belle Mare occupies a half-mile stretch of white sand on Mauritius's east coast, fronting a calm, coral-rich lagoon. Rebuilt after a 2022 fire and reopened the following year, the resort wears a contemporary tropical look from architect Jean-François Adam and designer Jean-Marc Tang: airy indoor-outdoor pavilions, sand-toned minimalism, pastel accents and tables cast from reclaimed local sand. There are 174 suites and 12 villas with garden or ocean balconies, nine restaurants and bars (Amari by Vineet Bhatia leads the line-up), the LUX Me Spa, and a 22,000-square-foot ocean-facing pool, one of the largest on the island.
Who's it for
Best for:
Families and active couples who want a polished, design-current beach resort with serious range. Expect a strong kids' programme at PLAY, a teen den at Studio 17, complimentary watersports from windsurfing to wakeboarding, a beachfront cinema, and wellness journeys built around three-, five- or seven-day spa plans. Honeymooners and wedding parties are well looked after too.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers seeking an intimate, small-scale boutique or a quiet adults-only retreat will find the scale and family energy too much. Those wanting a walkable village or off-property dining scene should note the setting is resort-bound on a remote coast.
Bottom line
What sets this property apart is the breadth: a top-tier beach, an unusually ambitious food line-up anchored by Amari, and a kids' and watersports programme that genuinely earns its keep. It suits multi-generational groups and active couples best. Book an Ocean Suite for the lagoon view, and pair the stay with the Catamaran Day experience to Ile aux Aigrettes.
