Character and identity
LUX South Ari Atoll spreads across more than two miles of sand in a marine-protected atoll reached by seaplane, with 193 thatched villas (garden, beach and overwater, some with pools) designed by Thailand's P49 Deesign in a whitewashed, nautical-blue palette that blurs inside and outside. The landscaping by Stephen Woodhams threads green pockets, hammocks over the lagoon and egg chairs into the foliage. Eight restaurants and five bars cover the dining, the LUX ME Spa adds a Chinese teahouse and overwater treatment rooms, and the service register is relaxed Maldivian rather than starched.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and families drawn to marine life above all else. The atoll has 50-plus dive sites with whale sharks, manta rays, wrecks and caves, a resident marine biologist runs coral planting and reef clean-ups, and the PLAY kids' club keeps children busy with treasure hunts and snorkelling. Plant-based eaters are well served by the "Keen on Green" menu across all outlets.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers chasing a small, intimate hideaway will find 193 villas and two miles of island a lot to absorb, and the all-inclusive, activity-led rhythm suits joiners more than recluses. Design purists after a singular architectural statement may prefer a more curated property.
Bottom line
What sets this resort apart is the marine programme: few Maldivian properties combine a protected whale shark atoll, a resident biologist and serious sustainability credentials (the sea-based solar platform, a single-use plastics ban) at this scale. Book it for the water, not the architecture. Families and divers should stretch to an overwater villa with pool; couples after quiet should request a villa at the island's far end.
