Character and identity
Makanyi sits in a quiet corner of the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve where no other lodges operate, just a handful of private homes, giving the property an unusually exclusive slice of bush. The seven thatched villas in terracotta tones read more like a relaxed family home than a polished safari camp, an aesthetic shaped by British owner Jessica Gold, who took the property over in 2015. Expect an all-inclusive rhythm built around game drives in vehicles capped at six guests, a pool, gym and restaurant on site, and the genuine likelihood of elephants or giraffe wandering past your bed or breakfast table.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples, small groups and multi-generational families who want a safari that feels like a private house party rather than a resort. The intimate vehicle size and uncrowded traversing area make it especially rewarding for serious wildlife watchers who want to linger on a sighting without other vehicles pressing in.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers who prefer the polish and anonymity of a larger camp, or who want a deep menu of dining venues, designer interiors and spa treatments. The aesthetic is classic-thatched and homey rather than architecturally bold, and the scale is genuinely tiny.
Bottom line
The real draw here is the traversing rights: a section of Timbavati to yourselves, six-seater vehicles, and the freedom to stay with a lion pride or wild dog pack as long as you like. That access, more than the rooms or food, is what you're paying for. Book when you want sightings without the scrum, ideally taking the whole lodge for a family or friends group.
