Character and identity
Set deep in Boynton Canyon, against the red rock walls and adjacent to Kachina Woman, this 23-room terra-cotta retreat is the wellness mothership of the American Southwest. A two-year, $40 million overhaul by original architect Dana Tang has expanded the property without breaking its meditative spell: low-slung casitas with kiva fireplaces and heated floors, a sunken living room, a juice bar, and a light-filled two-story movement studio. Hummingbird, helmed by chef Beau Widener, anchors the dining, while the spa runs the full register from sports massage to astrology readings, sound resonance and Crystal Grotto rituals. Service is quietly omnipresent, with nightly turndown gifts and a Journey concierge custom-building itineraries.
Who's it for
Best for:
Solo travellers, mother-daughter pairs, close girlfriends and burned-out executives who want a true reset. It rewards guests who book a multi-night Journey package, lean into the spiritual programming (vortex lectures, guided meditations, chakra work) and dress for the canyon in robes and Vuori rather than for dinner.
Should look elsewhere:
Families are out: the 16-plus age policy is strict. Anyone wanting nightlife, walkable town life, a beach or a livelier social scene will find the seclusion claustrophobic, and sceptics of energy work and celestial ceremonies may struggle to extract full value from the spa menu.
Bottom line
The spa programme, not the rooms or the food, is the reason to come, and it now runs deeper and longer than almost anywhere comparable in the country. Book a three- or four-night all-inclusive Journey rather than a room-only stay to access the dedicated Journey wing, plunge pool and consultations; a Casita King with a canyon-facing patio is the sweet spot on price.
