Character and identity
Moxy Chicago Downtown is an eight-story, 156-room rec room for grown-ups in the thick of River North, its façade punctuated by neon pink light strips and its lobby crammed with shuffleboard, foosball, a piñata, a podcasting booth, and graffiti-covered concrete. Reception doubles as the bar. Food and drink come from just two outlets: Zombie Taco, open round the clock with a walk-up window, and Bar Moxy, where cocktails carry joke names and the back bar leans mezcal and tequila. DJs spin in the lobby four nights a week. Service is deliberately pared back but quick and courteous.
Who's it for
Best for:
First-time Chicago visitors and design-curious millennials who want a competitively priced base in River North, within walking distance of the city's best bars and restaurants. Ideal if you treat the room as a crashpad, value buzzy public spaces, and like the idea of late-night tacos and a stiff Paloma downstairs.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting a traditional luxury stay, a concierge, room service, or quiet. Rooms are small with open-plan layouts, no proper bathroom or closet, a translucent shower door, and no in-room phone. Families and business travellers needing space and services will struggle.
Bottom line
This is a stylish budget play, not a full-service hotel, and the rooms are essentially a bed with a view attached. Book a south- or east-facing room for unimpeded skyline views, come for two or three nights with a plan to be out exploring, and lean into the lobby scene rather than expecting comfort upstairs.
