Character and identity
Built on the site of the old St Andrews railway station and now under Kohler ownership, this 144-room resort sits directly on the 17th hole of the Old Course, with sweeping views across the links to West Sands Beach and the North Sea beyond. Jacques Garcia designed the interiors in earth tones flecked with the property's signature red, with restrained tartan and rich wood nodding to Scotland. Bathrooms come with Kohler fixtures, including chromotherapy. The Kohler Waters Spa is the wellness anchor, with hydrotherapy pools, a thermal suite and a deep relaxation suite. Service runs courteous and professional from check-in to golf storage.
Who's it for
Best for:
Golfers, first and foremost. If a pilgrimage to the birthplace of the game is the point of the trip, no address gets you closer to the action, and the concierge can secure tee times at the affiliated Duke's Course when the Old Course ballot doesn't fall your way. Spa-focused couples and Scotland-curious travellers using St Andrews as a touring base also fit well.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone who isn't at least spa-curious or golf-adjacent may find the property's whole orientation slightly beside the point. Note too that the Road Hole Restaurant and its 200-plus whisky bar are currently closed for renovations, which thins the on-site dining lineup considerably for a stay of any length.
Bottom line
The pull here is pure location: a front-row seat on the 17th, paired with a serious Kohler spa and reliably professional service. Book an Old Course-facing room if the view is the reason you're coming, or stretch to the Penthouse with its private terrace and bedroom fireplace. Check the Road Hole reopening timeline before committing to longer stays.
