Character and identity
Ottantotto occupies a renovated palazzetto in Oltrarno, the quieter side of the Arno where artisan workshops, family trattorias and vintage shops define the streets. With just seven rooms, the property feels closer to a private house than a hotel: arrival is by emailed passcode, check-in happens in The Living Room beside a large fireplace and open kitchen, and a stone-paved garden shaded with trees doubles as the breakfast spot. The look mixes wood-beamed ceilings and casement windows with botanical-print fabrics, antique pieces and colourful tiled bathrooms. The register is unpretentious and design-literate rather than formal.
Who's it for
Best for:
Independent travellers and couples on a second or third Florence trip who want to skip the Duomo queues and dig into Oltrarno's vintage boutiques, stationery shops and neighbourhood restaurants. Design-minded guests who prefer a small, characterful house over a polished international hotel will feel at home.
Should look elsewhere:
First-timers wanting concierge hand-holding, families needing space and kids' programming, or anyone expecting a full-service property with restaurant, bar, spa and room service. Dining on site is limited to a breakfast buffet and an honesty bar.
Bottom line
This is a seven-key guesthouse with a clear point of view, not a hotel in the conventional sense, and the Oltrarno address is half the reason to book. Spend the money if you want to live like a temporary local rather than a tourist. Request a Superior room or the suite for garden views and the option of in-room or terrace breakfast.
