Character and identity
Cantilevered along a Big Sur cliff across 100 redwood-covered acres, Post Ranch Inn is a 39-room hideaway of treehouse-style structures built from reclaimed wood, steel and stone, all engineered to disappear into the Santa Lucia Mountains. Every room frames either ocean or forest; none have televisions. The property runs an unusually rich slate of activities (guided hikes, stargazing, garden tours, yoga, falconry lessons with a master falconer), two pools including a cliff-edge infinity pool, and a spa that leans esoteric with shamanic sessions and energy work alongside facials. Sierra Mar, glass-walled above the Pacific, anchors the dining. Service is warm, attentive, and pointedly informal.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples celebrating something. This is an adults-only retreat for travellers who want seclusion, nature, and quiet luxury rather than scene or nightlife: think private basking tubs for two, sunset dinners above the fog line, and afternoons split between the infinity pool and a hawk on your glove. Design-minded guests and sustainability-conscious travellers will feel especially at home.
Should look elsewhere:
Families, anyone travelling with children, and guests who want urban energy, shopping, or a busy resort social life. The remote Big Sur setting (150 miles from San Francisco, 300 from LA) means committing to the property. If you need a TV, formal service register, or beachfront, this isn't the fit.
Bottom line
What you're paying for is the setting and the architecture's deference to it: cliffside views, near-total privacy, and a property that pulls you outside rather than into your room. Book an Ocean Room or Coast Suite for the private basking tub and patio, lock in a sunset reservation at Sierra Mar, and come with a special occasion in mind.
