Character and identity
Set inside Casa Rosselli-Massa, the 17th-century home of a noble goldsmith in central Valletta, this 25-room boutique pairs Baroque bones with a contemporary hand: bold wallpaper, coloured marble, warm timber, and rooms styled in black, white and grey with furnishings that feel gallery-curated. Three restaurants anchor the food offer, led by Under Grain, the fine-dining room overseen by Maltese chef Victor Borg with a French-leaning Mediterranean menu. Grain Street handles the all-day brief, and rooftop Over Grain pours sundowners over the city to the sea. A plunge pool, arrival prosecco and a perks card complete the picture.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and design-minded travellers who want a small, characterful base inside Valletta's walls, within a five-minute walk of the Grand Master's Palace, St John's Co-Cathedral and Fort St Elmo. Foodies will get real mileage from Under Grain, and wellness-seekers should target one of the three rooms with an in-suite sauna.
Should look elsewhere:
Families wanting a kids' club, beach loungers or a full-service resort. The spa is offsite at sister property AX The Palace, there's no proper pool beyond the plunge, and the historic-townhouse footprint means compact public spaces rather than sprawling grounds.
Bottom line
The pull here is the building itself, a genuine Valletta palazzo reworked with confident contemporary design, plus a serious in-house restaurant in Under Grain. Book it if you want walkable sightseeing, strong cooking and a small-house feel rather than resort amenities. Splash on a Three Herons Suite for the spiral-staircase layout, or a wellness room if downtime matters; aim for shoulder season to enjoy the rooftop.
