Character and identity
Set high in the bohemian hills of Santa Teresa, this 42-room boutique hotel occupies an 18th-century former coffee plantation with sweeping views over Rio, the surrounding mountains and Guanabara Bay. The neo-colonial design language draws on recycled tropical woods (jacaranda, cinnamon, ipe) and local golden slate, with Brazilian arts and crafts woven throughout. Térèze is among the city's more serious restaurants, and the terrace bar pours a deep selection of Brazilian rums. A tropical-garden pool, Le Spa using natural oils and local ingredients, and a hillside calm set the tone, far above the beach scene below.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-minded couples and creative travellers who want Rio with character rather than Copacabana sand. Expect to enjoy long lunches on the terrace, sundowners at the Pool Lounge over the bay, spa afternoons, and arranged adventures like a helicopter flight over the city or rock climbing on Sugarloaf.
Should look elsewhere:
Beach loyalists and families wanting walk-out access to Ipanema or Copacabana will find the hillside location inconvenient, as everything coastal requires a taxi. The intimate scale and bohemian-quarter setting also won't suit those after a big-resort amenity stack or nightlife on the doorstep.
Bottom line
The defining draw here is the setting: a hillside coffee-plantation hotel with one of the best views in Rio and a restaurant that holds its own in the city. Spend the money if you want Rio's atmosphere and cooking over its sand. Book a room with the bay view, and aim for an evening pool-lounge drink at dusk.
