Character and identity
Set on the Chao Phraya in Bang Rak, this 799-room riverside hotel trades the gridlock of central Bangkok for a calmer waterfront perch, with a river taxi pier and Skytrain link keeping the city within easy reach. The property splits across two wings: the Krungthep, with larger, view-led rooms and its own (smaller) pool, and the Shangri-La Wing, closer to the gym, main pool and dining. Nine restaurants and bars, two outdoor pools, tennis and CHI, The Spa (home to some of the city's largest treatment suites, focused on Thai pressure-point work and herbal compresses) anchor the experience. The Horizon Cruise puts guests on the river itself.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and design-minded travellers who want a river view and a calmer base for Bangkok, plus repeat visitors who value Horizon Club privileges (breakfast, evening cocktails, pressing) or the extras bundled into Krungthep Deluxe Balcony rooms and suites. Spa-goers and anyone who enjoys arriving and departing by water will be in their element.
Should look elsewhere:
If you want to step out of the lobby into Sukhumvit nightlife or Siam shopping, the Bang Rak setting will feel removed. Krungthep guests should also know that reaching the main pool, gym and restaurants involves a roughly 10-minute walk through connecting corridors.
Bottom line
The river, and what the hotel does with it, is the reason to book: the cruise, the views, the pier access and the sense of breathing room you rarely get in Bangkok. Spend up for a Krungthep Deluxe Balcony or suite for the views and club-style inclusions, and accept the walk to the main amenities as the price of the better room.
