Character and identity
Spread across the northern end of Kaanapali Beach at the foot of historic Black Rock, this 508-room resort opened in 1963 as the area's second hotel and still hosts the nightly cliff-diving ceremony honoring Chief Kahekili that has run since opening day. The vibe is sprawling and low-key rather than grand: an open-air lobby, grassy lawns leading to the pool and sand, and rooms refreshed in 2018 with all-white bathrooms and bright, airy interiors. Dining centers on the No Ka Oi breakfast buffet at Maui Courtyard and the open-air Mai Tai Bar, which faces the torch-lighting ritual each evening.
Who's it for
Best for:
Families and couples wanting a comfortable Maui base at a price that undercuts most of the Kaanapali strip, particularly Marriott Bonvoy members looking to redeem points. Snorkelers are the other natural fit: Black Rock is genuinely one of the better reef entries on the island, and it's right out front.
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone expecting a true luxury resort, intimate scale, or polished service should book elsewhere. With 500-plus rooms in a crowded stretch of resorts, service can feel perfunctory, pool chairs run short, and the property reads functional rather than design-led.
Bottom line
This is a points-friendly, snorkel-driven Kaanapali stay rather than a luxury experience, and the Black Rock setting is what makes it worth choosing over neighbors at the same price. Book on points or off-peak rates, request an ocean-facing room away from the pool lawn if you want quiet, and angle for the Ali'i Suite if the budget stretches.
