Southern Ocean Lodge
Review
Character and identity
Reborn in 2023 after the 2020 bushfires, Southern Ocean Lodge is a 25-villa cliff-top retreat on Kangaroo Island's Cape Younghusband, a 40-minute hop from Adelaide. Architect Max Pritchard Gunner's redesign leans into the landscape with floor-to-ceiling glass, locally commissioned art (Janine Mackintosh in the Southern Spa, Indiana James in the Great Room) and timber-and-stone interiors that frame the Southern Ocean. The Southern Spa runs three treatment rooms, sauna and hot and cold plunge pools; the kitchen is produce-driven, working marron, juniper and finger lime into seasonal menus paired with Barossa wines from a serious cellar.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and design-literate travellers who want remote Australian wilderness without giving up architectural rigour or a proper wine list. Ideal if you value guided nature experiences (Flinders Chase, Admirals Arch seals, whales in season), foraged-and-local cooking, and a screen-free, all-inclusive rhythm with complimentary tours, in-suite bar and open bar at the Great Room.
Should look elsewhere:
Families wanting a kids' club or beachfront swimming, and anyone who needs in-room televisions, nightlife or a walkable setting. The journey is real (flight or ferry plus transfer), and the rugged clifftop location rewards slow stays, not quick stopovers.
Bottom line
What you're buying is a singular piece of Australian wilderness architecture with the food, wine and guided experiences to match, all rolled into one inclusive rate. Splurge on a suite with a private plunge pool for the full effect, plan at least three nights to justify the journey, and aim for whale season (June to October) if marine wildlife is the draw.
