Character and identity
Set inside a 1905 Stanford White building that once housed America's first professional theatre group, The Chatwal occupies a quietly theatrical pocket of Midtown five minutes from Times Square. Thierry Despont's refit leans hard into 1930s Art Deco and ocean liner detailing: faux-leather built-ins, steamer-trunk wardrobes, oxblood and ochre palettes across 76 rooms. The Lambs Club, helmed by chef Michael White, anchors the ground floor with a stone fireplace and a polished pre-theatre crowd. Downstairs, Naturopathica Spa runs an indoor lap pool, steam rooms and a compact gym. House butlers and a noticeably attentive front-of-house define the service register.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and design-literate travellers who want a small, cosseting hotel within walking distance of Broadway, Fifth Avenue and Central Park. It suits guests who value butler service, period interiors and a proper restaurant on site, and theatre-goers who'll make use of the Lambs Club pre-show menu Tuesday through Saturday.
Should look elsewhere:
Families wanting space and a kids' programme, or anyone after a sprawling resort feel, won't find it here: 76 rooms, a small lobby and a single restaurant define the footprint. Guests who want a buzzy, scene-y address should look downtown.
Bottom line
The pull here is a genuinely intimate, design-led Midtown hotel where Despont's interiors and the butler service do the heavy lifting, with Broadway essentially on the doorstep. Book a Chatwal Crown suite (the 875-square-foot Director Suite if budget allows) and aim for late autumn through the holidays, when Rockefeller Center is a ten-minute walk and the hotel is at its most atmospheric.
