Character and identity
The Idle Rocks sits right on the waterfront in St Mawes, one of Cornwall's prettiest harbour villages, with a grandstand view of the bay. It's a small Relais & Châteaux property of around 20 individually designed bedrooms, most facing the sea, finished with cotton sheets, fresh flowers, local artwork and Aromatherapy Associates bathroom products (some bathrooms with freestanding tubs). The restaurant is the centre of gravity: head chef Dorian Janmaat, previously of Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons, cooks a Cornish, seasonal, sustainability-led menu with meat, fish and dairy sourced from the county. Expect a harbourside terrace in summer and a lounge fire in winter.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and food-focused travellers after a quietly luxurious Cornish bolthole, where the day revolves around the bay view, a walk along the coast, kayaking or a fishing trip, and a long dinner. Design-minded guests who appreciate detail (and book well ahead) will find the room product satisfying.
Should look elsewhere:
Families wanting a kids' club, anyone after a big-resort spa programme or multiple restaurant choices, and travellers who want urban buzz. With just 20 rooms and one dining room, the experience is intimate by design, not energetic.
Bottom line
The cooking is the headline act, and it elevates a stay here from a pretty Cornish hotel into a genuine food destination. Book a sea-view room (the small footprint means category matters), reserve dinner when you reserve the room, and plan well in advance: availability tightens quickly, particularly across the summer terrace season.
