Character and identity
Anchored at the base of Ajax Mountain with true ski-in/ski-out access via a second-floor Ski Concierge room, this 92-key property is Aspen's grande dame, even if it only opened in 1989. The exterior is deliberately unassuming; inside, a gas-lit lobby and the Living Room lounge set a mountain-modern tone, with rotating artwork and a seasonal wall garden. Rooms (refreshed by Champalimaud in 2017, with six suites by Holly Hunt) lean neutral and hygge, with fireplaces, heated bathroom floors, and bespoke "First Tracks" amenities. Ajax Tavern handles après; Element 47 anchors fine dining alongside a 20,000-bottle cellar. The spa is small (three rooms), service is first-name from arrival.
Who's it for
Best for:
Serious skiers and the global-elite crowd who want the most polished ski stay in the country, with a concierge that can arrange snowcat powder runs, pre-opening laps with ski patrol, and a complimentary shuttle to Snowmass, Buttermilk, and Highlands. Families are well looked after (cribs, play tents, Playstations), and dogs are welcomed through the Petiquette program.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers wanting a full-scale destination spa will find the three-room facility limiting, and anyone hoping for hushed seclusion should note that the lobby and Ajax Tavern run loud and social at après. Budget-sensitive guests will feel the rates sharply.
Bottom line
What sets this place apart is the combination of true ski-in/ski-out positioning, a deep wine programme staffed by multiple sommeliers, and an Adventure Program that turns the concierge into a fixer. If you can absorb the price, book the two-bedroom Suite 2 for groups or a Holly Hunt suite for a couple, and lock in dates months ahead for holiday weeks, which sell out reliably.
