Character and identity
Opened in 1919 on the eighteenth green of Pebble Beach Golf Links, this cream-coloured lodge with green awnings sits inside a gated coastal community between Carmel and Monterey, with Stillwater Cove glinting behind the lobby and Point Lobos and the Big Sur mountains in the distance. The 161 rooms are spread across 13 multistorey guesthouses (plus the newer Fairway One wing), each with a fireplace, big windows and a patio or balcony. Dining runs from the seafood-focused Stillwater Bar & Grill to grab-and-go at Pebble Beach Market. Spa access is at Five-Star Casa Palmero next door. Service is anticipatory: a personalisation email lands two weeks ahead of arrival.
Who's it for
Best for:
Golfers, first and foremost, who want to tee off on arguably the best public course in the country (and the 2027 U.S. Open venue). Beyond the fairways, it suits couples and active travellers drawn to coastal horseback riding, tennis, the heated pool at the Beach & Tennis Club, and easy day trips to Carmel-by-the-Sea, Big Sur and Carmel Valley wine country.
Should look elsewhere:
Travellers who want a true beachfront resort with swimmable surf, a dedicated kids' club, or buzzy urban dining should look further south or up the coast. The spa is at the sister property, not on site, and design-led modernists may find the 1919 country-club aesthetic too traditional.
Bottom line
The address is the whole proposition: staying on the eighteenth at Pebble Beach, with tee-time priority and the Special Services concierge smoothing every reservation in advance. Book if golf is the reason you're coming, and request a Fairway One room or one with a Carmel Bay view. Secure tee times the moment you confirm the room, and use the free Monterey Airport transfer and inter-resort shuttle.
