Character and identity
A 50-room boutique that opened in 2021 at the northern edge of Charleston's French Quarter, The Loutrel pays tribute to landscape architect Loutrel Briggs through a botanical, garden-inflected design language: a mature ficus over the cocktail bar, citrus topiaries in the lobby, living orchids in every room. Michael Graves and team shaped the four-storey interiors in soft blues and shimmering greys with iridescent accents. The lobby's Veranda Lounge channels a Charleston porch, complete with hanging swing and ceiling fans, while a rooftop terrace clears the treeline for steeple-studded skyline views. Service is small-hotel familiar, relaxed, attentive.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-minded couples, solo travellers and multigenerational groups who want a contemporary base inside the historic district. Ideal if you value walkable access to galleries, Waterfront Park, King Street shopping and historic house tours, plus thoughtful local touches (Deep Steep bath products, Buxton Books curation, a knowledgeable in-house walking guide).
Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting a full spa, a pool, or a serious restaurant programme should book elsewhere; food and drink centre on small plates, a complimentary cocktail hour and breakfast buffet. Families needing kids' facilities, and guests who prefer big-resort anonymity, won't find them here.
Bottom line
What sets this place apart is the marriage of brand-new construction with a botanical design vocabulary and a rooftop that genuinely earns its keep, all inside the French Quarter's most walkable stretch. Spend the money if you want Charleston on foot with a polished, intimate base; request a southern-facing upper-floor room for skyline views, and time a stay around an Afternoon Tea service.
