Character and identity
A 97-room boutique on a quiet, tree-lined stretch of Thompson Street, The Manner brings a Milanese sensibility to SoHo through Hannes Peer's interiors: ochre walls, red lacquer, dark Italian marble, velvet green seating, and ceramic and tile textures layered for a warm, cinematic mood. The lobby is deliberately compact, with the social heart upstairs in The Apartment, a fireplace-anchored guest lounge. Dining runs through The Otter, a seafood restaurant from Alex Stupak, and Sloane's, a second-floor cocktail bar, with a rooftop opening in summer. Service is hands-off by design, closer to staying at a stylish friend's place than a formal hotel.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate couples and solo travellers who want SoHo on their doorstep without the sidewalk crush, and who'll make use of aperitivo hour, Stupak's cooking, and a sceney bar upstairs. The members-club feel of The Apartment suits guests who like to linger over a book or a drink rather than retreat to their room.
Should look elsewhere:
Families are out: no under-16s. Anyone who wants a TV in the bedroom, a formal concierge culture, signed bills and traditional check-in rituals, or a calm residential pocket of Manhattan should book elsewhere. SoHo remains chaotic the moment you leave the block.
Bottom line
The reason to book is the total design package and the social architecture around it: The Apartment, The Otter, and Sloane's make this feel like a small, well-cast world rather than a hotel with a restaurant attached. Spring for a suite with a balcony for the Empire State view, time arrival around the 4 to 7 p.m. aperitivo, and avoid if you need overt service.
