Character and identity
Set inside Ron Phillips's 1969 modernist landmark on Cotton Tree Drive, The Murray is a Foster and Partners conversion that turned a government office tower into a 336-room hotel without erasing its bones. The white facade with three-storey arches and recessed windows still defines the silhouette; inside, Italian marble, minimalist gold accents and a serious art collection (including Bahk Seon-ghi charcoal installations and Jaume Plensa's Awilda's White Head) set the tone. Expect skyline views over Hong Kong Park, an indoor pool, a five-suite spa, and Popinjays, the 26th-floor rooftop bar and restaurant looking out over Central.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate travellers and architecture buffs who want a quieter, greener corner of Central with strong food and a rooftop view. Couples and solo business guests will appreciate the calm, the art programme, the bespoke menu service, and a spa that trades scale for privacy (two suites have in-room saunas).
Should look elsewhere:
Families wanting kids' programming, shoppers who want to step straight onto Queen's Road, and anyone needing MTR access at the door. Central station is a 10 to 15 minute walk, mostly uphill, and the hotel's mood is grown-up rather than playful.
Bottom line
What you're paying for here is the building itself and the art inside it, wrapped in a calmer pocket of Central that most Hong Kong hotels can't offer. Book a room facing Hong Kong Park or St. John's Cathedral, plan at least one dinner at Popinjays, and request the complimentary in-room check-in so you arrive straight upstairs.
