Character and identity
The Standard's ninth outpost lands just off Orchard Road in the leafy, low-rise enclave of Orange Grove, next door to the Shangri-La and steps from the Botanic Gardens. Behind a shimmering lenticular facade by DP Architects, Verena Haller and Ministry of Design have built what reads as a Slim Aarons set drop in the tropics: striped umbrellas around a pool with a swim-up bar, terrazzo and retro lighting in Café Standard, a stepped garden courtyard, and commissioned art at every turn. 143 rooms across eight floors, a modern izakaya called Kaya, and staff in Shone Puipia uniforms set the register.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate scenesters and couples who want to be in the social swim. The programming (run club in the Botanic Gardens, Monday social hour, pool parties, fashion takeovers, bingo) suits travellers who treat the hotel as a clubhouse, and food-curious guests will get a lot out of Kaya's fermentation-led cooking and the bar's theatrical cocktails.
Should look elsewhere:
Families needing connecting rooms, wellness travellers expecting a full spa and gym (there's neither, just borrowable Technogym kit on a deck and twice-weekly yoga), and anyone who wants a beachside or genuinely quiet retreat. Entry rooms start at 250 square feet, and only the top suite has a bathtub.
Bottom line
What you're buying here is atmosphere and scene: a photogenic, art-filled social hub with seriously inventive food and drink, parked in one of Singapore's calmest pockets but minutes from Orchard Road. Spend the money if that programme excites you; book Suite Spot if you want space, a tub, or are travelling as a family, and time a stay around Monday social hour or a pool event.
